Kingfish Restaurant & Pub

Oakland, CA

Project Description

Andrew + Chang directed the relocation, rehabilitation and additions to the historic Kingfish Pub.  The Kingfish closed its original Claremont Avenue location on Jan 2015 and opened its new Telegraph Avenue location three and a half months later. The Partners in Preservation awards honor was presented to the Kingfish in 2016 for its preservation efforts.

The program for the project included the preservation and relocation of the original interior and exterior, building and site infrastructure upgrades, including accessible new restrooms, a new outdoor patio and bar, and a new office structure with accommodations for future food service. You can read more about it here

Project challenges included:

  • A highly compressed time frame.

  • The piecemeal construction of the original vernacular structures demanded a high level of care to insure the stability of the building during the moving process.

  • Preservation and re-installation of historical sports ephemera/memorabilia associated with and attached to the building interior

  • Working within the context of the California Building Code and the State Historical Building Code to upgrade existing building and new site infrastructure, including increased structural capacity, fire protection, egress, mechanical systems and universal accessibility.
